This vibrant platter is turned from curly maple.  The red stain was added to emphasize the incredible chatoyance of the wood, which is a striking optical quality in which changes in areas of light and dark grain direction cause the concentration of reflected light to change dramatically based on the orientation of the surface of groups of wood cells.  It can be seen in its natural state in the center of the piece.  It measures 13 1/2" in diameter and is 2" high.
