This quail family is led by the mother hen and followed by 3 chicks.  In order to preserve the shape of the gourd, the gourd was cleaned and hollowed from the bottom.  Therefore, the bottom of the piece is open.  The quail were wood-burned and colored with acrylic inks.  It measures 8" in diameter and is approximately 9" tall.   As with all gourds, irregularities in shape and mottling of surface are part of the natural beauty of the art form.
